Tournaments (4)

How many tournaments occur during the season?

Usually 9-10 tournaments for our NVWF league. And, usually on Sundays.

How many tournaments do I need to attend to qualify for the Regional Tournament?

The federation rule is that a wrestler must participate in 50% of all tournaments PLUS ONE MORE to be eligible for the finals.

Example: You would need to participate in a minimum of 5 tournaments (out of 8) in order to compete in the final NVWF regional tournament.

How long (time) are tournaments?

NVWF Tournaments: Your wrestler will usually have completed their 3 matches in about 1-2 hours.

Does my wrestler have to compete in Tournaments?

No. But, the NVWF tournaments are very fair for beginner and intermediate wrestlers. We take into account your wrestler’s age, weight and skill level to ensure that they will not be wrestling other kids with an unfair advantage. Your child will usually wrestle other children of the same age, weight, and skill set.

My wrestler is big / small, who will they wrestle?

Highlander Wrestling is awesome in that you only wrestle people around your same size, age and skill set. As you progress, your skills will improve and you will wrestle tougher opponents. So – If you weigh 80 lbs, you will wrestle people within 5 lbs of your weight.

Our goal, as a beginner and intermediate wrestler, is not to have you go undefeated for the season…it’s to challenge you… If you are dominating at a certain level we will move you up.

Keep in mind… When you wrestle regular tournament or make your school team. You will wrestle people your same weight, no matter what their skill level.

CAWL (5)

Does advanced practice mean that my wrestler is on the CAWL team?

No…If your wrestlers skills have peaked in the NVWF practice room (Mon and Wed)…A coach will invite your wrestler to participate in the advanced group. However, they will still need to win their prospective wrestle-off to have a slot on the CAWL Team. Advanced practice wrestlers may still participate in NVWF events if they are not a scoring CAWL team member. That means that a wrestler may go to CAWL meets and participate in exhibition matches and also participate in a NVWF tournament the same day / weekend. If there is no CAWL event on a particular weekend, then any advanced wrestler may participate in the NVWF meet.

Persons who choose to wrestle NVWF are ranked in escalating order B (Beginner), A1, A2, A3, A4, and CO (CAWL). Wrestlers participating in the advanced practice are ranked at minimum A3 or A4 in the NWVF to keep competition fair. Many CAWL only wrestlers do not participate in NWVF events because the level of completion may be low and the a competitors may be few, if any.

What are the parameters / rules of a CAWL wrestle off?

The CAWL team is an all-star team and we are trying to assemble a winning team. We do try to be fair, and extenuating circumstances such as injury or illness can make wrestle-off times vary. However, final decision is with the head coach. The rules are posted here. But basically, the best available wrestler gets the spot. The head coach may also change roster line-ups to give our team a point advantage or as a part of overall strategy.

Practice (8)

Can I practice without headgear?

Yes you may practice, but we suggest headgear during live wrestling to prevent injury to your ears.

Can I drop off my child at practice?

Yes. You may leave your wrestlers at our facility during practice hours and pick them up later. However, there is a small seating section in the practice facility for you to observe practice.

Can my wrestler attend the advanced practice?

Only if your wrestler is invited by the head coach. Wrestlers may be asked to participate in the advanced practice anytime during the season when the coach thinks that they are ready. Our coaches are constantly monitoring skill levels, maturity, and mental acuity. All of these factors and more are measured when deciding if your wrestler is ready for advanced training. *** Some wrestlers are immediately brought into the advanced training session because of size and age. However, placing wrestlers that may disrupt the learning environment could negatively effect the practice for the majority of the advanced team. Your wrestler may be asked to return to the NVWF practices to build basic skills. Consult with a coach if there are any questions.

It may be tempting for parents with multiple children participating to bring wrestlers of lower levels to advanced practice. Please refrain from doing this. You may have to attend both practices to help all of your children become better wrestlers. Advanced wrestlers are always welcome at NVWF practice, but not vice-versa.

Is there a vending machine at the practice facility?

No. There are no food machines or drink machines at the gym. However the bathrooms do have faucets in case you need to fill a water bottle.

Can I use the weights, machines and punching bags at the facility?

No. The highlanders share our facility with MMA Fighters. We are there only to wrestle. Please keep the children off of the equipment to prevent injury.

What do we need to bring to practice?

You will need wrestling shoes (Only to be worn on the mat), a water bottle, and headgear. Please wear clean shorts and a t-shirt to practice in.

Who decides if my child is placed in the “advanced” wrestling practice?

Your child may be asked to join our advanced team based on the opinion of the coaches. The head coach has final say. There are various factors involved such as maturity level and age that may trump actual skill. In rare instances the wrestler may be asked to return to the intermediate class to work on core skills.
