History

The Stafford County Highlanders Wrestling Team is a nonprofit organization founded in November 1994 to promote youth wrestling in the Northern Virginia area and was recognized by the County in July 1995. Our team is a member of the Northern Virginia Wrestling Federation (NVWF) and the Capital Area Wrestling League (CAWL). The Highlanders actively participate in the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association (MAWA), Virginia Wrestling (VAWA) State Championship, as well as open tournaments. Currently, the Highlander Wrestling Team is the only team in the Stafford County area that is participating in the CAWL.

EST1994We are committed to encouraging young boys and girls, elementary through middle school (5-15 yrs), to learn and participate in one of the world’s oldest sports — WRESTLING. Our volunteer staff is comprised of dedicated coaches and administrative personnel that share a common belief; through the sport of wrestling our kids are taught the importance of academics, mental focus, physical fitness, dignity, and most of all, self respect and respect towards others. We believe that these qualities are the cornerstone for success, not only as a wrestler, but as a young person going through life.

The Folkstyle Wrestling Season begins in November and continues through March. Folkstyle wrestling is the same type of wrestling taught in the middle schools, high schools, and colleges. Our seasons run concurrently.

The Freestyle and Greco-Roman Season begins in March and continues through May.

If you live in the Stafford, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania or the surrounding area and you would like your child to be part of the Highlander Team, or just want additional information about wrestling, please feel free to contact us.
